Midwives is specialized in obstetrics. The term is used in reference to women and men, although most midwives are women. In addition to providing care for women during pregnancy and childbirth, some midwives may also provide primary care to women, attention to women in relation to reproductive health, annual gynecological exams, family planning and care menopause. Many developing countries are investing money and training to midwives and other community health workers can provide primary care, which is currently lacking.
Midwives are specialists in childbirth, postpartum and health care for women. They are educated and trained to recognize variations of normal progress of work and deal with deviations from normality to discern and intervene in high-risk situations. In many developing countries, midwifery is the first line of maternal health services and provide necessary care safely and profitably, where available. In the US, more women use obstetricians rather than midwives, who are specialists, not only in healthy pregnancies, but also in diseases related to maternity and surgery. Obstetricians are doctors and can provide surgery and instrumental deliveries in situations requiring them.Midwives refer women to specialists such as obstetricians or Perinatologists in complications related to pregnancy and childbirth when a pregnant woman requires care beyond the scope of practicing midwives. In many parts of the world, these professions work together to provide care to women of childbearing age. In others, only the midwife is available to provide care. Midwives are trained to handle certain more difficult deliveries, including breech births, twin births and births where the baby is in a posterior position, using non-invasive techniques.
