Herbicides, also commonly known as weed killers, are pesticides used to kill unwanted plants. Selective herbicides kill specific targets, while leaving the desired crop relatively unharmed. Some of these act by interfering with the growth of the weed and are often synthetic mimics of natural plant hormones. Herbicides used to clear waste ground, industrial sites, railways and railway embankments are not selective and kill all plant material with which they come into contact. Smaller quantities are used in forestry, pasture systems, and management of areas set aside as wildlife habitat. Some plants produce natural herbicides, such as the genus Juglans (walnuts), or the tree of heaven; such action of natural herbicides, and other related chemical interactions, is called allelopathy. In the US in 2007, about 83% of all herbicide usage, determined by weight applied, was in agriculture. In 2007, world pesticide expenditures totaled about $39.4 billion; herbicides were about 40% of those sales and constituted the biggest portion, followed by insecticides, fungicides, and other types.

Scope & Importance

Due to intensive agriculture and development of technology in the field of agriculture there is vast scope for controlling weeds by using herbicides, At present due to expanding industrial areas, the villages workers are attracted towards the industries for seeking the employment and created shortage of labourers for cultivation of land. At present there is lot of scope for use of herbicide due to shortage of labourers and increases in wages of farm labourers. Now a day due to the development of agriculture the certain herbicides are also useful for controlling weeds in different crop combinations or cropping systems. Number of herbicides for control of weeds in cropped and non-cropped area is also manufactured in the country. The control of weeds with herbicide is useful in zero and minimum tillage. In many advanced countries the average annual consumption of herbicides is 675 to 1350 gm / ha. In Japan it is as high as 5000 gm / ha. Against these high figures, in India at present the average annual herbicide use is hardly 40 gm / ha. This is largely because of poor purchasing power of most of our farmers and also due to lack of technical knowledge about use of herbicides. The cost of certain herbicides is also very high as the basic ingredients for manufacturing herbicides are imported from the developed countries. The present annual installed capacity of herbicide production in India is about 6000 tonnes. About ¾ of the available herbicides in India are used in plantation crops. At present herbicides use in field crops under our conditions is practiced in major crops like sugarcane, wheat, rice, maze, chillies, vegetable etc.

Scope of Herbicides in different regions

Seeds have become fundamental input in agriculture crop production and leading the industry to achieve its transformation in line with the changing demand from the growers as well as to suit the changing weather patterns. During the last decade, the advances in genetic engineering has resulted in revolutionary changes in the development of more efficient seeds or planting materials with desired traits in it. Moreover, an increasing adoption rate of technologically developed and genetically modified crops throughout the globe has supplemented the sales value of the seed market in the recent past. In addition, increasing production of bio-fuel across the major economies with an objective to generate an alternative source for the scarce traditional fuel has inclined the demand for corn and oilseed crops.
The global market, in terms of value, is projected to reach $92.04 Billion in 2020, at a CAGR of 9.4% from 2015 to 2020. The changing nature of the seed industry following the entry of large firms has been the subject of much debate. Many large firms invested economies of scale in R&D and have been able to subsidize seed research with resources and revenues from other corporate divisions. The entry of large multinational firms in the industry driven the North American market and the growth is projected continue at a CAGR of 9.7% from 2015 to 2020.
