Developmental psychology is a field that aims to explain how children and adults change over time. A major chunk of theories within this discipline highlights the development during childhood- the period in an individual's lifespan during which majority of the changes occurs.

Developmental psychology spans a wide range of theoretical area, such as biological, social, emotion, and cognitive processes. Empirical research in this area tends to be dominated by psychologists from western cultures such as North American and Europe, although during the 1980s Japanese researchers began making a valid contribution to the field. Originally concerned with infants and children, and later other periods of great change such as adolescence and aging, it now encompasses the entire life span.

This field examines changes across a wide range of topics including motor skills and other psycho-physiological processes, problem solving abilities, conceptual understanding and acquisition of language, moral understanding, and identity formation.

Developmental psychology were focused primarily on child psychology. In the 1950s, however, they became concerned in the relationship between personality variation and child rearing, and the behavioral theories put forward by  B.F. Skinner and the cognitive theories of Jean Piaget were focused on  the growth and development of children through adolescence. At the same time, the German psychologist Erik Erikson asserted that there are meaningful stages of adult psychology that have to be considered in addition to child development. Psychologists also started to give importance to the processes that underlie the progress of behavior from birth to death in a person, which includes various facets of physical-chemical environment that can affect the individual during the intrauterine period and at birth.

By the latter part of the 20th century, developmental psychologists began to show interest in many broad issues dealing with the psychological process throughout life, including the relation between heredity and environment, continuity and discontinuity in development, and behavioral and cognitive elements in the development of the total person

Child Psychology examines the psychological aspects that occur during childhood. Child Psychology is vast topic that explores very specific areas concerning not just the physical growth of children, but their mental, emotional , cognitive andpsychosocial development as well.
