Pituitary gland, or hypophysis is referred to as the master gland as it controls the activity of most other hormone secreting glands. It is a small pea-sized gland that plays a vital role in regulating body functions.

Scope and Importance:
Pituitary gland is an endocrine gland weighing 0.5grams. It is present as a protrusion at the bottom of the hypothalamus at the base of the brain. Hormones secreted from the pituitary gland helps to control growth, blood pressure, certain functions of the sex organs, thyroid glands and metabolism as well as some aspects of pregnancy, childbirth, water/salt concentration of the kidneys, temperature regulation and pain relief.
The pituitary gland is differentiated into anterior, intermediate and posterior lobes. The anterior pituitary (or adenohypophysis) is a lobe of the gland that regulates several physiological processes including stress, growth, reproduction, and lactation. The intermediate lobe synthesizes and secretes melanocyte-stimulating hormone. The posterior pituitary (or neurohypophysis) is a lobe of the gland that is functionally connected to the hypothalamus. Conditions affecting pituitary gland may be classified into three main categories. The conditions causing the pituitary gland to produce too much of one or more hormone(s). Examples include acromegaly, Cushing's disease and prolactinoma.. Examples include adult growth hormone deficiency, diabetes insipidus or hypopituitarism. Examples include empty sella syndrome. In some cases a cell type may divide and form a small benign lump known as a tumor, and this leads to too much production of the hormone. If the tumor grows very large, it may squash the surrounding cells and stop them from working (hypopituitarism), or push upwards and interfere with vision – a visual field defect. In some rare cases the tumor may expand sideways and cause double vision as it affects the nerves which control eye movements. Even though the tumors are large, they usually remain quite benign and very rarely spread to other parts of the body.
Human growth hormones are one of the naturally occurring protein hormone secreted by the pituitary gland and are important for growth and development, especially in children and teenagers. Lower levels of human growth hormone results in dwarfism whereas excessive levels increase muscle mass by stimulating protein synthesis, strengthen bones by stimulating bone growth and reduce body fat by stimulating the breakdown of fat cells. Use of human growth hormone drugs has become increasingly popular as they are difficult to detect.
The Global Human Growth Hormone Market is growing at a rapid pace and is expected to post a CAGR of 4.22 percent from 2015-2019. New analysis from Frost & Sullivan European Human Growth Hormones Market, finds that the market earned $0.99 billion in 2012 and estimates this to reach $1.22 billion in 2019. The research covers adult and paediatric
The human growth hormone drugs market has been forecast to reach a market value of $4.7 billion by the year 2018, with the industry being predominantly driven by the high prevalence of growth hormone deficiency, improved delivery devices, development of novel drug delivery methods, and increasing indications of growth hormones.
