phaeochromocytoma

As per available reports about 6 relevant journals, 14 Conferences, 177 National Symposiums are presently dedicated exclusively to Phaeochromocytoma and about 164 articles are being published on Phaeochromocytoma.

A pheochromocytoma is a neuroendocrine tumor of the medulla of the adrenal glands. Up to 25% of pheochromocytomas may be familial. Pheochromocytoma is a tumor of the multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome, type IIA and type IIB (also known as MEN IIA and MEN IIB, respectively). The other component neoplasms of that syndrome include parathyroid adenomas, and medullary thyroid cancer.

Scope and Importance:

Mutations in the autosomal RET proto-oncogene drives these malignancies. Common mutations in the RET oncogene may also account for medullary sponge kidney as well. The diagnosis can be established by measuring catecholamines and metanephrines in plasma (blood) or through a 24-hour urine collection. Surgical resection of the tumor is the treatment of first choice, either by open pheochromocytoma or else laparoscopy.

Chromaffin cells (CC) produce catecholamines; oxidation of fresh tissue samples gives them their characteristic grey-brown stain. Although CC are mainly located in the adrenal medulla, accessory adrenal tissue comprising both cortical and medullary elements has been reported to be localized in the celiac plexus area in 16% of autopsies. Extra-adrenal chromaffin cells give rise to paragangliomas (PGLs; tumors situated along the paravertebral and paraaortic axes). Paragangliomas that are localized in the adrenal medulla are called pheochromocytomas (PHEOs; or more uncommonly termed adrenal medullary PGLs). In the absence of universally established criteria for defining malignancy, a PHEO is considered to be malignant in the presence of metastases.
