A form of cancer that begins in melanocytes. It may begin in a mole, but can also begin in other pigmented tissues, such as in the eye or in the intestines. The most dangerous form of skin cancer, these cancerous growths develop when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells triggers mutations that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors. Scope and Importance:
Melanomas often resemble moles; some develop from moles. The majority of melanomas are black or brown, but they can also be skin-colored, pink, red, purple, blue or white. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure, especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. Melanoma kills an estimated 9,710 people in the US annually.The field of cancer genomicsis rapidly progressing, yet the systematic application of current knowledge to improve patient care remains a formidable challenge. For melanomas that come back or spread, treatments include chemo- and immunotherapy, or radiation therapy. Five year survival rates in the United States are on average 91%.Melanoma is less common than other skin cancers. However, it is much more dangerous if it is not found in the early stages. It causes the majority (75%) of deaths related to skin cancer.
