Medicinal Mushrooms have a history of medicinal use spanning millennia. The mushroom with the longest record of medicinal use Ganodermalucidum is known in Chinese as língzhÄ« and in Japanese as mannentakeIn ancient Japan, Grifolafrondosa was worth its weight in silve. Antibiotics retapamulin, tiamulin, and valnemulin are derivatives of the mushroom isolate pleuromutilin. Plectasin, austrocortilutein, austrocortirubin, coprinol, oudemansin A, strobilurin, illudin, pterulone, and sparassol, are antibiotics isolated from mushrooms. Researchers have isolated a number of antifungal, antiviral, and antiprotozoan, isolates from mushrooms. Many mushroom isolates act as DPP-4 inhibitors, alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, and alpha amylase inhibitors in vitro. Ternatin is a mushroom isolate that suppresses hyperglycemia. Chaga is unique among medicinal mushrooms. In addition to its potent immune stimulating properties Chaga is also a powerful antioxidant. The MushroomScienceChaga extract was tested for its anti-oxidant properties by Brunswick Labs. They performed a test that assigns supplements an “ORAC” score, allowing the comparison of anti-oxidant properties between different types of supplements. Mushrooms defined as “medicinal” are those mushrooms that contain immune activating beta glucans and other polysaccharides within their indigestible cell walls. When properly extracted with hot water these polysaccharides are used in supplemental form to maintain, protect and support immune health.

Scope and Importance:
In addition to their nutritional value, many edible mushrooms have long been used in the Orient for medicinal purposes. At present there are at least 270 species of mushrooms that are known to have various therapeutic properties. Medicinal mushrooms have become more widely used as traditional medicinal ingredients for the treatment of various diseases and related health problems largely due to their increased commercial production. As a result of large numbers of scientific studies on medicinal mushrooms especially in Japan, China and Korea, over the past three decades, many of the traditional uses have been validated and new applications were developed. While much attention has been focused on their immunological and anti – cancer properties, mushrooms also known to have other potentially important therapeutic properties including antioxidants, anti- hypertensive, cholesterol.

Mushrooms are processed, produced, and consumed in many countries on a large scale. The global mushroom market is primarily driven by the increasing demand for the organic products. Mushrooms are highly popular in Asian countries such as China, India, and Japan. Asia holds the majority of the market share of the global mushroom consumption and is closely followed by North America and Europe. Europe is the leader in mushroom production and processing. The global mushroom market has shown remarkable growth in the recent years and is also showing attractive market potential for the future.

The global mushroom market is segmented into three major categories, on the basis of types into button, oyster, shiitake, and on the basis of category into canned, chilled, fresh, processed, and frozen. The market is also segmented by applications into recipes, F&B processing, and direct consumption. It is further segmented by geography into North America, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Rest of the World regions.

The global mushroom market is driven by factors such as increasing development of high yield systems, rising saturation in demand, and consumer shift towards value-added products. The increasing demand for organic products, rising health awareness, and the increasing power of supermarkets will also act as drivers for the global mushroom market.
