Linear accelerator which is also known as LINAC, is mainly used for external beam radiation treatment for cancer patients. This can be used for the treatment of cancer occurring in all the organs of the body, by delivering high energy x-ray to the region of patient’s tumor. This x-ray treatment only destroys the cancer cells while sparing the surrounding normal tissues. The LINAC is used to treat all body sites, using conventional techniques, Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Body Radio Therapy (SBRT). By using microwave technology (similar to that of radar), electrons of LINAC are accelerated in the part of the accelerator named “wave guide” and then allowed to collide with a heavy metal target. For this collision, high energy, x-rays are produced from the target. These high energy x-rays are shaped as they exit the machine to conform to the shape of the patient's tumor and the customized beam is directed to the patient's tumor. This shaping system is achieved either by blocks those are placed in the head of the machine or by the multi leaf collimator which is incorporated into the head of the machine. From gantry, which is the part of the accelerator, beam comes out and can be rotated round the patient. Radiation can be delivered to the tumor from any angle by rotating the gantry and moving the treatment couch, on which patient is lying down. LINAC therapy is painless. Patients treated with LINAC therapy have fewer side effects than patients treated with conventional radiation therapy.
