Continent Structure : Continental deformation is subject to first-order geodynamic forcing from an internal source. It can be deciphered and studied on the Earth surface through preserved structural objects, via the exhumation/erosion relationships of raised massifs and, at last, from the deposits in the associated subsiding basins. The deformation process of the continental crust in convergent areas remains highly debated. Discussions focus on the rheological control of the deformation, the origin of the topography, and the role of surface processes and their relationship with deformation in the upper crust. To address these broad issues, we attempt to better understand when and how orogens form, evolve, and subsequently collapse.

Earth Scope data sets are contributing to a comprehensive image of the deformation field and material properties of North America and the way it changes and evolves through time. We strive to articulate a time-dependent geodynamical model of continental evolution that assimilates and integrates geologic, geodetic, and seismological data sets. We strive to create a geodynamic model that parallels plate tectonics in its power to integrate our understanding.
Complex patterns of deformation and mountain building belie the heterogeneity and varied rheology of continental lithosphere, and its complex interactions with the underlying mantle. These observations will form the basis for a new, physics-based description of the dynamics of the whole Earth. It includes a continental transform system, with extensional, strike-slip and constructional regions, and continental arc and oceanic arc setting.
