Scope and Importance:

Owing to the importance of lignocellulosic biomass being the most abundant and bio-renewable biomass on earth, this critical review provides insights into the potential of lignocellulosic biomass as an alternative platform to fossil resources. In this context, over 200 value-added compounds, which can be derived from lignocellulosic biomass by various treatment methods, are presented with their references. Lignocellulosic biomass based polymers and their commercial importance are also reported mainly in the frame of these compounds.

Lignocellulosic biomass is the plant dry matter that is composed of carbohydrate polymers (cellulose, hemicellulose) and lignin, an aromatic polymer. Lignocellulose is the widely available plant raw material that is used for the production of bio fuels. Lignocellulosic biomass can be broadly divided into virgin biomass, waste biomass and energy crops. Virgin biomass comprises of all the naturally occurring terrestrial plants such as trees, bushes and grass. Waste biomass is formed as a by-product of various industrial sectors such as agricultural; forestry (saw mill and paper mill discards). Energy crops are crops with high capitulate of lignocellulosic biomass and it serves as a raw material for production of second generation bio fuel.

Market Analysis

Renewable energy policy in Europe will see biomass demand grow by almost 50% between 2010 and 2020 with increased use of biomass not only in the energy sector but also in industrial and Residential  sectors. Biomass is currently the largest source of renewable energy in Europe and is a relatively attractive option.
