Anxiety Medicine also known as anti-anxiety drugs or tranquilizers, are medications that relieve anxiety by slowing down the central nervous system. These include certain selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and the newer atypical antidepressants.

It has been seen that list of anxiety medications includes several types of medication including antidepressants, benzodiazepines, beta blockers and antipsychotics. However, the anti anxiety medication list includes all drugs approved by the FDA for the treatment of anxiety disorders as well as those commonly prescribed off. Only one drug is of the anti anxiety medication class: Buspirone (BuSpar). This drug is approved for anxiety disorders (in general). It has been seen that benzodiazepines are commonly used to treat short-term anxiety or for acute anxiety episodes. However, they are not typically used long-term due to concerns about benzodiazepine tolerance, dependence and abuse. Beta blockers drugs are known as antihypertensive medication because they lower blood pressure. It is estimated that beta-blockers and others reduce the physical symptoms of anxiety.

According to "The Economic Burden of Anxiety Disorders," a study commissioned by ADAA estimated that the anxiety disorders cost the U.S. more than $42 billion a year, almost one-third of the country's $148 billion total mental health bill. More than $22.84 billion of those costs are associated with the repeated use of health care services; people with anxiety disorders seek relief for symptoms that mimic physical illnesses.
