Abnormal psychology is the study of mental disorders (also called mental illness, psychological disorders or psychopathology). Mental disorders are surprisingly common. For example, a study conducted by the World Health Organization examined the prevalence, or frequency, of mental disorders in people visiting medical doctors in primary care settings in 14 countries. The study revealed that 24 per cent of these people had diagnosable mental disorders and another 10 per cent had severe symptoms of mental disorders.

The psychologist researches those categorise which are sense, perceptions, thoughts, volitions, and emotions. Psychology is a branch of Philosophy. It cannot suggest with the generalization of facts it must pass on to the inner character and constitution of the root and subject of these phenomena it must learn to explain the effect by its cause. Besides the fact that the main interest for mankind in Psychology is because of the expectation that some information as related the nature of the soul can be thence derived, there is another reason for the explicit treatment of these metaphysical problems. The two sets of questions are incapable of isolation. They can never be really separated. Our final conclusions as regards many vital philosophical problems are determined by the view taken of the nature of mental activity in the part of the science. Abnormal psychology uses two distinct concepts in an effort to explain mental disorders. These are the biological paradigm and the psychological paradigm. The biological paradigm focuses on the physical factors that affect psychopathology such as neurochemistry, genetics and heredity. The psychological paradigm is more concerned with the humanistic, cognitive and behavioral causes and effects of mental illnesses. With analysis and interpretation subject to a variety of approaches and perspectives, it is often a challenge to explain psychopathology. The realization that most mental disorders are associated with multiple factors has precipitated the need for researchers to take into account several theoretical perspectives when seeking to explain abnormal behaviors and mental illnesses. The approach of combining theoretical perspectives when diagnosing mental disorders is referred to as multiple causality. Classification of abnormal behaviors and mental illnesses (in North America) is standardized by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association. The most recent edition of this Abnormal Psychology and Psychiatry reference book is the DSM IV-TR. The manual provides detailed information on diagnostic codes, lists of disorders, the frequency of a disorder in the general population, gender and age differences for a particular disorder, the effects of treatment, common treatment approaches and other relevant facts.

The International Congress is going to be held, in Europe, with wider international participation. The Sixth Congress, Geneva 1909, in Russian, China, and Japan. After a hiatus for War I, the Seventh Congress met in Oxford, with greater participation from the war victorious Anglo Americans. In World War II, the U.S. military and intelligence agencies established themselves as profound funders of psychology through the armed forces and Strategic Services intelligence agency. University of Michigan psychologist reported that university researchers began large scale propaganda research in 1949–1951, and the last few months of the war saw a social psychologist become chiefly responsible for determining the week-by-week-propaganda policy for the USA Government. Cartwright also wrote that psychologists had significant roles in managing the economy. In 21th century the Academy of Psychology Research Office, became the Institute of Psychology. Most leading psychologists were educated in the USA, and the first concern of the Academy was reduction of these psychologists in the Soviet doctrines. Child psychology for nationally cohesive education is a central goal of the discipline.
