The performance of veterinary dentistry and oral medicine and surgery is part of the practice of veterinary medicine and is regarded as such under state veterinary practice acts. Veterinary dentistry includes the cleaning, adjustment, filing, extraction, or repair of animals' teeth and all other aspects of oral health care in animals. Veterinary dentistry is a function of veterinary practice because it requires diagnosis and treatment, and, to be fully effective, demands extensive knowledge of anatomy, anesthesiology, pharmacology, physiology, pathology, radiology, neurology, medicine, and surgery that is part of the graduate veterinarian's training. Veterinary health-care workers may be allowed to perform certain dental procedures under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian in accordance with state regulations.Oral health is a state of being free of chronic oral-facial pain conditions, oral and pharyngeal (throat) cancers, oral soft tissue lesions.. Recent advances in Cosmetic dentistry/Aesthetic dentistry, Veterinary, Restorative dentistry encouraged researchers to explore the potential for regenerating functional and living teeth. Scope and Importance:
Veterinary dentistry is the field of dentistry applied to the care of animals. It is the art and science of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions, diseases, and disorders of the oral cavity, the maxillofacial region, and its associated structures as it relates to animals. Veterinary dentistry involves every aspect of oral health care procedures including, but not limited to, the cleaning, adjustment, filing, extraction, or repair of teeth, and treatment of oral surgery to related structures. Veterinary dentistry is a component of veterinary practice that requires diagnosis and treatment and demands extensive knowledge of anatomy, anaesthesiology, pharmacology, physiology, pathology, radiology, neurology, medicine, and surgery. An understanding of the pathogenesis of dental diseases in animals is a requirement for making informed judgments regarding their treatment.
Veterinarians are uniquely qualified to diagnose dental disease and address unexpected health conditions that may arise during dental examinations and procedures, and to prescribe follow-up care. Veterinary dental procedures require the appropriate use of sedatives, aesthetic agents, pain management pharmaceuticals, antimicrobials, and other pharmaceuticals to maximize the comfort and safety of the animal(s) and ensure the successful outcome of the procedure. Knowledge of the etiological basis of dental disease is necessary in order to properly communicate prognosis and preventive procedures. The use of systemic antibiotics in veterinary dentistry for treatment of some infectious conditions of the oral cavity. Although culture and susceptibility testing is rarely performed on individual patients that have an infection extending from/to the oral cavity, the selection of an appropriate antibiotic should be based on published data regarding susceptibility testing of the spectra of known oral pathogens.
The global dental equipment market revenue is expected to increase from USD 6,081.4 million in 2013 to USD 8,453.7 million by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 4.9% from 2014 to 2020. The dental equipment market is fuelled not only by the prevention and treatment of disease, but also in large part by cosmetic dentistry, which sees an annual expenditure of $2.75 billion in the US alone. It is impossible to accurately state what proportion of this is dental expenditure. Interpretation of ‘dental’ varies greatly and in many countries the majority of expenditure is in the private sector and difficult to quantify.
