Dental public health (DPH) is a non-clinical specialty of dentistry also known as Community Dentistry. Dental public health is involved in the assessment of dental health needs and improving the dental health of populations rather than individuals. Oral health is a state of being free of chronic oral-facial pain conditions, oral and pharyngeal (throat) cancers, oral soft tissue lesions.. Recent advances in Cosmetic dentistry/Aesthetic dentistry, Veterinary, Restorative dentistry encouraged researchers to explore the potential for regenerating functional and living teeth. Sedation dentistry refers to the use of pharmacological agents to calm and relax a patient prior to and during a dental appointment. Oral hygiene : it is the practice of keeping the mouth and teeth clean to prevent dental problems. Recent advances in orthodontics technology make treatment more comfortable.

Scope and Importance:

Dental Public Health (DPH) is that part of dentistry providing leadership and expertise in population-based dentistry, oral health surveillance, policy development, community-based disease prevention and health promotion, and the maintenance of the dental safety net. Dental public health and the private practice model of care delivery together bear the responsibility of assuring optimal oral health for all Americans - individuals and populations. (DPH) is unique among the specialties in that it is not primarily a clinical specialty; it is a specialty whose practitioners focus on dental and oral health issues in communities and populations rather than individual patients. Dental public health DPH has been defined in many ways, from "the science and the art of preventing and controlling disease and promoting dental health through organized community efforts" to "a non-clinical specialty of dentistry involved in the assessment of dental health needs and improving the dental health of populations rather than individuals." While these definitions capture some of what DPH does, they fail to completely define the scope of what DPH professionals do and how they fit into the matrix that is today's dental profession. A range of factors determine health, or the lack of, from very individual drivers such as age and sex, through social and living circumstances to general socio-economic, cultural and environmental conditions.

It is the role of people working in dental public health to have an understanding of the factors that influence oral health and to work in partnership with organizations to improve oral health such as community health partnerships, councils, education departments and the voluntary sector. We support the existing sound strategy for Dental Public Health. This should underpin the development of the Government’s public health strategy, which we understand will be published in autumn 2011. This strategy was developed with broad professional input. We recommend that a commitment be made to ensure that there is adequate consultant advice available to the new structures and boards. One third of PCTs are currently without access to consultant advice, and around one fifth have no input from a Dental Practice Adviser, meaning that Dental Public Health is already considerably under-resourced. The average time commitment in PCTs that do have access to a Consultant is two days per week, with average Dental Practice Adviser input of only one day per week. The continuum of education and training in Dental Public Health must be closely monitored and safeguarded. Trainees will continue to require both NHS and local authority-based experience to build the required competencies to become a Consultant in Dental Public Health. We must ensure that Consultants in Dental Public Health are able to work effectively across organizations and populations within new structures.

Market Analysis:

The global dental equipment market revenue is expected to increase from USD 6,081.4 million in 2013 to USD 8,453.7 million by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 4.9% from 2014 to 2020. The dental equipment market is fuelled not only by the prevention and treatment of disease, but also in large part by cosmetic dentistry, which sees an annual expenditure of $2.75 billion in the US alone. It is impossible to accurately state what proportion of this is dental expenditure. Interpretation of ‘dental’ varies greatly and in many countries the majority of expenditure is in the private sector and difficult to quantify.
