Eczema, being a very common skin disease is capturing the eyes of the researchers around the globe. Dermatologists, Biologist and scientist from other integrated fields are trying to find out appropriate medications to cure this disease or to prevent this disease. Scope and Importance:
Eczema, or dermatitis as it is sometimes called, is a group of skin conditions which can affect all age groups. The severity of the disease can vary. In mild forms the skin is dry, hot and itchy, whilst in more severe forms the skin can become broken, raw and bleeding. Although it can sometimes look unpleasant, eczema is not contagious. With treatment the inflammation of eczema can be reduced, though the skin will always be sensitive to flare-ups and need extra care. Rather than a specific condition, eczema is a group of unrelated diseases that have a similar appearance.
Eczema medications can safely relieve symptoms and help the skin heal when used as directed. Of course, not everyone responds the same way to different eczema treatments. Topical corticosteroids: Creams and ointments with hydrocortisone steroids quickly help relieve itching and reduce inflammation. Barrier repair moisturizers: These eczema treatments are available OTC and by prescription. They help lock water into skin, repair damaged skin, and reduce dryness, redness and itching.
Topical immunomodulators: Pimecrolimus and tacrolimus, when applied to the skin, treat moderate to severe eczema in some patients. These medications work by reducing inflammation.
Systemic corticosteroids: These powerful drugs help relieve symptoms of severe or difficult-to-treat eczema.
Immunosuppressants: These drugs include cyclosporine, methotrexate and mycophenolate mofetil. They help suppress the overreaction of the immune system.
Antibiotics: Eczema causes skin to itch. Antibiotics treat these bacterial skin infections.
Antihistamines: These drugs help relieve itching symptoms.
