The concept of using plants for life support systems has been discussed and studied for nearly 40 years. The underlying principle involves the process of photosynthesis where carbon dioxide is removed from the air and fixed into organic compounds. Simultaneously, oxygen is released as a byproduct, thus providing two fundamental life support needs i.e. a supply of O2 and CO2 removal from the air. By selecting plant species that generate edible biomass (crops), a source of food is then added. Plants can also be used to purify water, where for example wastewater (gray water and urine) is added to the plant root-zone. Through the process of transpiration, plants take up and filter the water, which evaporates from their leaves creating humidity (water vapor), which can then be condensed and recycled to humans. The organic components in the wastewater are then degraded to CO2 by microorganisms in the root-zone or by the plants themselves. On a stoichiometric basis, these process of Biomass Production is the exactly the opposite of human respiration where food and O2 are consumed creating CO2 as a waste product.

Scope and Importance:
Biomass industries are those based on producing and using plant biomass. The Future Farm Industries CRC is researching and encouraging industries based on trees and shrubs planted to produce biomass for use in bioenergy plants to produce for renewable electricity or renewable transport fuels. The Future Farm Industries CRC’s activities are largely concentrated on frequent harvesting and chipping of the top growth of mallees, which are very well adapted to wheat belt conditions. It has been estimated that 90 percent of U.S. waste products could be burned, thereby providing the equivalent energy of 100 million tons of coal (20 percent of waste products will not burn though they can be recycled). In Western Europe, there are more than 200 power plants that burn rubbish (garbage) to produce electricity. Rubbish buried in the ground naturally yields methane gas during anaerobic decomposition (the decaying of organic matter in the absence of oxygen). One ton of refuse can produce 8,000 cubic feet (227 cu meters) of methane. Worldwide, there are 140 methane-collecting operations that tap into underground rubbish. For development of drugs for treatment of cholestatic liver diseases, fatty liver diseases, diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome their therapeutic targets are Bile acids and bile acid.

LONDON, April 15, 2015--Over the years to come, biomass will grow within the biopower, biofuels, and bioproduct sectors. About 70% of all biomass in the world is used in the residential sector, while 14% is used in industry and 11% is transformed into electricity, heat, or another energy carrier such as liquid fuel or biogas.
Under the present market conditions, the majority of available renewable power resources including biomass power are yet to become cost competitive compared to non-renewable resources including coal and natural gas. Going forward, benefits from national level programs, energy efficiency incentives, and financial incentives targeting the expansion of the renewables market will create demand for additional biomass power capacity globally between 2013 and 2035.
