    Deryl Troyer received his DVM in 1972 and a doctoral degree in anatomy, physiology and pathology in 1985 from Kansas State University. Dr. Troyer served as an assistant professor at the University of Illinois in Urbana, Illinois from 1985 to 1986, and was a visiting researcher in molecular genetics at Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1988.  He has been a professor at Kansas State University since 1986. He is co-discoverer of primitive stem cells within umbilical cord Wharton’s jelly, and a founding member of the Midwest Institute for Comparative Stem Cell Biology at KSU. He is a recipient of the Otto Zietschman Prize in Experimental Embryology, and is a recipient of the Pfizer Award for Research Excellence as well as several teaching awards.     BIOGRAPHY
    Research Interest :
    Investigating stem cells as a platform for specific delivery of anti-cancer molecules. Strategies employed to achieve this goal include utilizing genetically engineered cells for cancer gene therapy or utilizing the cells to deliver nanoparticles loaded with small molecule anticancer drugs.     Biography :
    Jagat R Kanwar is an Immunologist and Molecular Biochemist with an International reputation in investigating fundamental and applied molecular aspects of cancer and chronic inflammation. He did his PhD from Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India. Before joining Deakin University in 2006, he was a Senior Scientist/Senior Research Fellow in the University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand. During the past decade his research both academic and commercial has centered on understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms and/or finding treatments for a variety of chronic inflammatory diseases and different types of cancer. Dr Kanwar has published 55 research articles, 12 invited reviews and 5 book chapters, in highly ranked, international, peer-reviewed journals. These publications have added to the body of knowledge in the fields of immunology, cancer gene therapy, nanomedicine, cell biology and biotechnology, and have extended these disciplines. He is a key inventor on 9 international patents and has provided consultancy to 5 Biotechnology based companies. He is a member of editorial board for 7 international journals and a nominated member of more than 12 national and international societies including American Society of Nanomedicine.     Jimmy Thomas Efird completed his Doctorate in Epidemiology (Biostatistics Concentration) at Stanford University School of Medicine. He currently is an Associate Professor at the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University (ECU) and has a joint appointment as Epidemiologist/Chief Statistician in the Center for Health Disparities Research. Prior to joining ECU, Dr. Efird was Director of the Biostatistics Facility at the John A. He then joined as Bhopal University as Professor of Microbiology in 1985. Prof. Bisen was Visiting Professor at Institute of Environmental and Biological Sciences, University of Lancaster, Lancaster, England and Visiting Research Professor at the Department of Biological Sciences, The University of Illinois at Chicago, USA. He was U.S. National Science Foundation Fellow at University of California at Davis, USA in the Department of Bacteriology.     Vasiliy Galat is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at Northwestern Universitys Feinberg School of Medicine. He is also the director of the Childrens Research Center iPS and Human Stem Cell Core Facility. In 1998, Dr. Galat earned his PhD in biology from the Russian Academy of Science and continued his studies at the Max-Delbruck Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin. In 2005, the American Board of Bio-Analysis certified Dr. Galat as a High-Complexity Clinical Laboratory Director. He started his clinical research career at Reproductive Genetics Institute in Chicago, directed the IVF laboratories at the New England Medical Center, Boston, Women’s and Infant Hospital, Providence, and the Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis Laboratory, Los Angeles.     Dr. Kuang received Ph. D. in Physiology and Cell Biology from University of Alberta, Canada. He is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at Purdue University and a member of Purdue University Center for Cancer Research. His research concerns stem cells in the adult muscles that are commonly known as satellite cells. He has identified a small population of re-populating cells within the satellite cell niche. His research challenges the conventional view of satellite cells by demonstrating their hierarchical composition and asymmetric self-renewal, and has implications in the development of therapeutic treatment of degenerative muscle diseases and ageing-related muscle wasting. Dr. Kuang has published 40 peer-reviewed journal papers, including papers in Cell, Cell Stem Cell and Nature. Dr. Kuang’s research is funded by the Muscular Dystrophy Association (2008-2011), the United States Department of Agriculture (2009-2012), and the National Institute of Health (2010-2015; 2011-2016). He identified during his postdoctoral research the role of Pax3 and Pax7 transcription factors in muscle stem cells, and discovered that asymmetric cell fate determination underlies the cellular heterogeneity in the muscle stem cell niche. As an independent investigator, ongoing research in his lab investigates the molecular mechanisms regulating self-renewal and differentiation of skeletal muscle resident stem cells, and explores the potentials of stem cell-based therapies in the treatment of degenerative diseases.     Dr. Nady Golestaneh is an Assistant Professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Cellular Biology She received her PhD and MS degrees in Biology and Pharmacology of Aging from University of Paris VI Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris France and her BS in Cellular Biology and Biochemistry from University of Paris VII Jussieu in Paris France She performed postdoctoral training at NIH NEI and Johns Hopkins University before joining Georgetown University School of Medicine in 2005 Recently she has shown that male germline stem cells can become pluripotent capable of differentiating into the three primordial germ layers offering the possibility of autologous cellbased therapy in degenerative diseases In parallel Golestaneh’s lab has demonstrated that the iPS cells can be differentiated into functional retinal pigment epithelium that could be prominent candidates for regeneration therapies in agerelated macular degeneration AMD Dr Golestaneh’s innovative work in the area of stem cells research has earned her several prestigious national and international awards and her research is supported by NIH grant.     Dr. Golestaneh′s lab is committed to researching how aging mechanisms affect the cells and induce diseases such as aged-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness among people over 55 years of age in the western world. Recent generation of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells from somatic cells has the potential to accelerate the implementation of stem cells for clinical treatment of degeneration diseases by bypassing immune rejection and ethical problems using patient-specific iPS cells. Using patient-specific iPS cells Dr. Golestaneh is investigating the mechanisms that induce the AMD and is developing ways to stop this disease from occurring. One of the essential reasons for the lack of understanding of the underlying pathophysiology of human AMD is the absence of reliable experimental models that recapitulate all features of the disease. Generation of AMD patient-specific hiPS cells and subsequent differentiation into retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) would provide in vitro models that are otherwise experimentally unattainable. Golestaneh’s lab has shown that the iPS cells can be differentiated into functional RPE that could be prominent candidates for regeneration therapies inAMD. In addition, the patient-specific iPS cells are used in her lab as an in vitro model to study the genetics of AMD disease and to eventually develop targeted drugs for treatment of AMD. In addition, Golestaneh’s lab is interested in using the human iPS (hiPS) cells as an in vitro model of human aging and has created hiPS cells from young and aged donors to subsequently differentiate them into somatic cells in order to study human aging mechanisms. The iPS cells would be of great interest to elucidate the genetics of human aging mechanisms, since recent studies have shown that telomeres are elongated in iPS cells compared to the parental differentiated cells, and the somatic mitochondria within hiPS cells revert to animmature ESC-like state and hiPS and hES cells, although not identical, share similar mitochondrial properties. In addition she investigates the influence of human KL gene in normal and pathological aging to understand the mechanisms of KL-induced human aging.     RESEARCH INTEREST

    Dr. Hu obtained his medical degree from Shanghai, China in 1983. Subsequently, he came to Canada and obtained his PhD in Neuroscience from Université Laval in 1989. He was a fellow of Fonds de Recherches en Sciences du Quebec and Medical Research Council of Canada at McGill University, and in 1991 he became a Medical Research Council Scholar and assistant professor with the Division of Neurology, University of Ottawa and Ottawa Hospital. Dr. Hu remained in Ottawa until 2003 before being recruited to the University of Calgary and AHS (then the Calgary Health Region).    BIOGRAPHY

    Dr. Hu is best known for his seminal work on a number of small brain circuits that matter to humans. Prominent examples include thalamic pacemaking neurons for EEG rhythm, bursting neurons in neurohormone secretion, thalamic tremor cells in Parkinson’s disease, “cue” neurons in sensory processing and non-spiking neurons in temporal lobe development. He is particularly interested in designing new models of therapeutic brain stimulation and non-invasive clinical interventions (e.g. auditory cueing and music) that target essential brain circuits to promote functional recovery and wellness for patients with movement and cognitive impairments.     Gary Guishan Xiao is a Director of the Functional Genomics and Proteomics laboratories at the Creighton University. Osteoporosis Research Center, is an internationally recognized expert in the field of proteomics and metabolomics of cancers and bone disease. Dr. Xiao earns his Ph.D. in molecular computational biology about a dozen years ago, focusing on structural modeling of ligand-enzyme interaction and prediction of protein refolding pathways during protein translational process. Dr. Xiao had his postdoctoral research trained in Baylor College of Medicine and UCLA, focusing on pharmacokinetics and biochemistry of non-steroid inflammatory drugs such as aspirin-derivatives and their target, human prostaglandin H synthases H1 and H2, and cell cycle regulation, especially, the role of c-Myc in cardiac termination differentiation. Dr. Xiao’s research at harbor UCLA medical Center and City of Hope National Cancer Center were highly focused on genomic and proteomic interpretations of diet-induced obesity/diabetes and its complications such cancers and osteoporosis. Dr. Xiao joined Osteoporosis Research Center at the Creighton University Medical Center since 2007.
