    Biography :
    Gregory J.Bix received his B.A. (Summa Cum Laude with High Honors) in Neuroscience and Biology from Brandeis University in 1993, where he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society. He earned his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 1998 and his M.D. was awarded from the Baylor College of Medicine in 2000. From 2000-2001 he completed his pediatric internship at Baylor College of Medicine and in 2001 a fellowship in neurology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He trained as a postdoctoral fellow at Thomas Jefferson University from 2002-2005. Then he became a Research Assistant Professor in 2006. Dr. Bix joined the faculty at Texas A&M University Health Science Center in 2007.    BIOGRAPHY
    Research Interest :
    His lab is interested in the role of extracellular matrix in stroke, the third leading cause of mortality in the United States. Vascular matrix components are often very sensitive to proteolytic processing/degradation in models of focal cerebral ischemia. Often such processing will generate biologically active matrix fragments. One focus of our lab is to determine how select matrix fragments affect the neurovascular unit, the functional multicellular unit that is perturbed in stroke. Another focus of our lab is to determine what role these matrix fragments could play in neurodevelopment involving processes that are often recapitulated in response to CNS injury.     Biography :
    Mariusz Z. Ratajczak is a Director of Stem Cell Institute at James Graham Brown Cancer Center, Professor of Medicine for the of Department of Medicine, Professor of Immunology for the Department of Microbiology, University of Louisville, Louisville, Ky. Henry and Stella Hoenig Endowed Chair in Cancer Biology. Foreign member of Polish Academy of Art and Science. He has received his MD from Pomeranian Medical University, Poland (1975-1981) and PhD in Experimental Hematology from Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw (1886). He received the 2008 President’s Award for Outstanding Scholarship, Research and Creativity from the University of Louisville, the 2007 Mosaic Award from Jewish Family and Vocational Service, the 2006 Award in Medicine and Biology from the Foundation for Polish Sciences (highest scientific award in Poland), the 2002 Chad Kopple Spirit Award from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and is the 2008 distinguished recipient of the 2008 Cancer Researcher of the Year. He is serving as an editorial board member of 9 reputed journals. He published 400 peer reviewed papers and book chapters.    BIOGRAPHY

    Biography :
    Ming Pei completed his Ph.D. from Beijing University and conducted postdoctoral studies at Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST). Currently he is an Associate Professor and the Director of Stem Cell and Tissue Engineering Laboratory at the Department of Orthopaedics at West Virginia University. He also serves as Adjunct Faculty in Exercise Physiology and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at WVU. He has published more than 45 papers in reputed journals and is serving as an Editorial Board Member for seven journals.     BIOGRAPHY

    Biography :
    Herzog received a Ph.D. in Microbiology from Auburn University in 1996. He performed postdoctoral research in gene therapy at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia until becoming faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2005, he joined the University of Florida, where he is currently Professor of Pediatrics, Molecular Genetics and Microbiology. Dr. Herzog’s research has received several prestigious awards from foundations and societies. He served as chair of the immunology and education committees of the American Society of Gene Therapy and edited two textbooks. He is currently Deputy Editor of the journal Molecular Therapy and Executive Editor of the Journal of Genetic Syndromes and Gene Therapy, and member of the NIH study section Hemostasis and Thrombosis. His laboratory is funded by multiple grants from the NIH and other agencies.     BIOGRAPHY

    Biography :
    Fengwei Bai has completed his Ph.D from Fudan University in 2002 and conducted postdoctoral training at Yale University School of Medicine. He is an assistant professor at the University of Southern Mississippi. Dr. Bai has published more than 20 papers in reputed journals and serving as an editorial board member of Internal Medicine - Open Access.    BIOGRAPHY

    His research interests are to understand how viruses are recognized by the host’s innate immune system and how innate immunity initiates and generates protective adaptive immunity. Long-term research goal is to use this knowledge in rational design of effective vaccines or therapeutics, or of microbicides for the prevention of transmission of viral pathogens.     Biography :
    Joni H. Ylostalo received his PhD from Tulane University in Biomedical Sciences in 2008 under the supervision of Dr. Darwin J. Prockop studying human mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (hMSCs) at the Center for Gene Therapy. Since 2008 Joni has served as a Senior Research Associate at the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at Texas A&M Health Science Center performing translational and basic research with hMSCs. Joni is also the Director of the Microarray Core Facility at the institute. He has over 30 peer-reviewed publications in various national and international journals concerning MSCs, gene expression analysis, and protein biochemistry.    BIOGRAPHY

    Biography :
    Karaoz received his Ph.D. degree in Histology&Embryology at Gazi University in 1994. In his early academic career, he lectured in Histology&Embryology Department at Suleyman Demirel University (Isparta/TURKEY). After the visiting period at Joslin Diabetes Center (Boston) in 2005, he established the Center for Stem Cell and Gene Therapies Research and Application (SCGTR) in 2006 at Kocaeli University. He has been still holding the positions of director in the research center and the head of the Stem Cells Department since its opening in 2010. His main interests are Tissue Regeneration, Immune Suppression by Stem Cells, and Diabetes.     Jui-Yang Lai obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 2006 from the National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan. Currently, he is working as an Associate Professor of Institute of Biochemical and Biomedical Engineering, Chang Gung University, Taiwan. Dr. Lai’s primary research activities are centered on the development of functional biomaterials for ophthalmic use, particularly on tissue engineering and drug delivery. He has published 4 book chapters and 30 international peer review journal papers. Dr. Lai also serves as an editorial board member for 8 international journals and a peer reviewer for 27 international journals.    BIOGRAPHY

    Dr. Lai’s primary research activities are centered on the development of functional biomaterials for corneal/retinal transplantation and regenerative medicine.
