Patent analysis is a unique management tool for addressing the strategic management of the firm’s technology and product or service development process. Translating patent data into competitive intelligence allows the firm to gauge its current technical competitiveness, to forecast technological trends, and to plan for potential competition based on new technologies. Some of the methods and techniques that are commonly used in Patent Analysis. Patent analysis is an extremely versatile tool, with many implications for businesses that is strategic planning, mergers, acquisitions, licensing opportunities, R&D management, human resources, competitive intelligence, business intelligence, etc. Since this study was developed as part of an intelligence studies course, my primary aim is to examine patent analysis as a tool for intelligence, particularly competitive intelligence. For the analysis of patents is to examine patents and related trends within the pharmaceutical industry. Analysis included historical patent application and issuance trends by company (pre- and post-publication), patents per assignee (by country), technology class analysis, reference or citation analysis and mapping, and external patent landscape analysis. The main service of Patent Analysis includes: • The overall rate of international patent activity • Monitor the different players, including private firms, public institutions and individual inventors working in the selected technology area • Review the geographical spread of patenting activity • Access related documents, such as international search reports • Follow up patenting activity at the national level in certain countries • Subscribe to regular RSS updates of new patent activity in your area of interest.
