Pigs are widely used to study a variety of human diseases because these animals are similar to humans with respect to anatomy, physiology, genetics and immune responses.14 Of the many immune system parameters that have been evaluated, less than 10% of the murine immune system is similar to the human immune system; in contrast, more than 80% of the porcine immune system is similar to the human immune system.

This similarity makes pigs a better model than mice for evaluating human infectious diseases, immune responses and vaccine development. gnotobiotic pigs are used to study rotavirus and norovirus infections and demonstrated that neonatal gnotobiotic pigs can be successfully used to model human enteric viral infections . neonatal gnotobiotic pigs may be susceptible to EV71 infection and provide a good animal model.
