Medicines while pregnant is not unusual for pregnant women to feel under the weather. Also, little is known about the effects of taking most medications during pregnancy. There are plenty of over-the-counter drugs available for minor conditions but not all of them are safe to consume during pregnancy. Although most of the over-the-counter drugs have an excellent safety figure, some are known to affect the fetus adversely. As the foetus is going through critical stages of development, these drugs can affect him/her in a very different manner than they affect the mother, at times leading to birth defects or other physical or mental problems. Safe consumption of drugs is essential to optimize the health of both the baby and the pregnant woman. Not using and medication that one needs can be more harmful to the mother and the baby than using the medicine.
Plenty of pregnant women take prescription medications for health conditions like asthma, diabetes, seizures, and heartburn. The safety of some drugs might change with the gestational age of the fetus. Around 1 percent or more of birth defects result from maternal drug exposure, as a result of which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has assigned risk categories to each drug. Plenty of drugs are not evaluated in the controlled trials and probably will never be due to ethical reasons. The most commonly consumed OTC pain drugs are acetaminophen (Tylenol), aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including ketoprofen (Orudis), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)and naproxen (Aleve). When you are pregnant, it is necessary to ask the doctor about the medication that are safe and the ones you need to find alternatives for. Medications labelled 'herbal' or 'natural' may also have unknown side effects on the baby. Most herbal preparations and supplements have not been proven to be safe during pregnancy. When it comes to prenantals, they are essential as well as safe during pregnancy.
A few alternative therapies like acupuncture have proved to be safe and effective for pregnant women to relieve some of the uncomfortable side effects of pregnancy. But one must always talk it over with their doctor before using any of them. Clinical trials conducted after releasing the drugs in the market have proved that certain medications during pregnancy cause serious birth defects. While some medications are known to be harmful when taken during pregnancy, the safety or risks of most medications are unknown. The effects depend on many factors, such as the dosage/route of administration, the trimester medication is taken, other health conditions of the pregnant woman, other medications taken by the pregnant women etc.
