Breast Cancer is the most common type of cancer after lung cancer in women in the world. Breast imaging techniques plays an important role in early diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of breast cancer. The advantages of early detection of breast cancer allow a decrease in the mortality rate by 25-30 % in women aged 50 or older. Breast imaging involves a number of minimally invasive procedures that can be used to detect, diagnose and treat abnormalities in the breast tissue. Women’s are encouraged to undergo Breast imaging exams regularly to help screen for any changes or abnormal breast lumps, as early detection is valuable in the treatment of a cancer or tumor. There are several different types of breast imaging procedures, each with their own advantages.
Scope and Importance:
The current methods used for the Breast imaging are mammography, Ultrasonography, Breast MRI, scintimammography, Lymphatic mapping, PET scan, Stereotactic imaging, Galactography, Computed Tomography, Isotopic Breast Imaging and Guided Breast Sampling. A mammogram is an X-ray image of the breast. Mammography is the tool that uses X-rays to create mammograms. It is used to find early signs of breast cancer. Images of the breast can be captured on film (standard) or on a computer (digital). For women with dense breast tissue, digital may be more accurate than standard. Ultrasound uses sound waves to make images of the breast. It is often used as a follow-up test after an abnormal finding on a mammogram, breast MRI or clinical breast exam. Ultrasound is mostly used on pregnant women to look at a growing baby. A breast MRI uses magnetic fields to create an image of the breast. It can sometimes find cancers in dense breasts that are not seen on mammograms. Breast MRI is often used with mammography for screening some women at a high risk of Breast imaging .
