Waste electrical and electronic equipment i.e WEEE is end-of-life electrical and electronic equipment and covers everything which depends upon battery or plug. It is classed as either Industrial WEEE or Domestic WEEE. WEEE recycling is problem of global concern because of the nature of production and disposal of waste in a globalized world. WEEE constitutes Large household appliances e.g. fridges, cookers, microwaves, Small household appliances e.g. vacuum cleaners, irons, IT and telecommunications equipment – e.g. personal computers, Consumer equipment e.g. radios, televisions, Lighting equipment e.g. straight and compact fluorescent tubes, Electrical and electronic tools – e.g. drills, saws and sewing machines, Toys, leisure and sports equipment e.g. electric rains, games, Medical devices e.g. (non infected) dialysis machines, analyzers, Monitoring and control equipment e .g. smoke detectors, thermostats, Automatic dispensers e.g. hot drinks dispensers etc. Certain materials, particularly metals, in electronic devices can be salvaged and recycled, and proper handling of electronics ensures that no harmful materials such as lead will contaminate our landfills or water supply. Some WEEE contains harmful substances, like ammonia, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) , Mercury, Asbestos , Lead and other substances including phosphorous pentachloride in CRTs, Components containing refractory ceramic fibers (RCFs), Components containing radioactive substances which affect negatively to environment or to human health. This can make it difficult to recycle or dispose. The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive) is the European Community directive 2002/96/EC on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) which, together with the RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC, became European Law in February 2003. The WEEE Directive set collection, recycling and recovery targets for all types of electrical goods.
