The term shipping originally referred to transport by sea, but is extended as refer to transport by land or air; we called carriage as well. Logistics a term borrowed from the military environment is also fashionably used in the same sense. Merchant shipping is the lifeblood of the world economy, carrying 90% of international trade with 102,194 commercial ships worldwide. On rivers and canals, barges are often used to carry bulk cargo.

OMICS International is an amalgamation of Open Access publications and worldwide international science conferences and global events .OMICS International conferences series Organizes 1000+ Conferences Every Year across USA, Europe & Asia with support from 1000 more scientific societies and Publishes 700+ Open access journals which contains over 50000 eminent personalities, reputed scientists as editorial board members.

Scope and Importance:

About 90% of world trade is carried by the international shipping industry. Without shipping, the import/export of affordable food and goods would not be possible - half the world would starve and the other half would freeze! Shipping is regulated globally by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The harsh nature of the sea exposes ships to considerable physical risk, so a total commitment to safety pervades all deep sea shipping operations. Shipping is the least environmentally damaging form of commercial transport and, compared with land based industry, is a comparatively minor contributor to marine pollution from human activities. There are over 50,000 merchant ships trading internationally, transporting every kind of cargo. The world fleet is registered in over 150 nations, and manned by over a million seafarers of virtually every nationality.

Region wise scope

The majority of the shipping industry ratings are recruited from developing countries, especially the Far East and South East Asia. The Philippines and India are very significant maritime labour supply nations, with many seafarers from these countries enjoying employment opportunities on foreign flag ships operated by international shipping companies. China has also seen a large increase in the number of seafarers, but at the moment most of these work on the Chinese fleet, meeting domestic requirements. Eastern Europe has recently become an increasingly large supplier of seafarers with high numbers from countries including the Ukraine, Croatia and Latvia. Other major labour supply countries include Greece, Japan, Russia and the United Kingdom.
