Medicine shortages can occur for many reasons, such as manufacturing difficulties or problems affecting the quality of medicines that can impact on patient care. Regulatory authorities within and outside Europe are increasingly working together to prevent shortages and to limit their impact whenever they occur.
Patient use medicines are vital for the health and the economy. The drug shortages demands attention and collaboration from everyone involved in providing life-saving drugs. This includes both the pharma companies producing brand-name drugs and generic drug manufacturers (whose products accounted for nearly 80 percent of prescriptions filled last year), as well as wholesalers, distributors, pharmacies and healthcare.
Shortages affect less than a percent of all medications in the market, and most shortages involve generic drugs, with the FDA particularly calling attention to growing shortages among “older, sterile injectable drugs”. However, any lack of medicines can deeply impact users. Biopharmaceutical o have worked to prevent drug shortages in advance, and will continue to work closely with the FDA to prevent manufacturing disruptions.
