A laser is a device that emits light through a process of optical amplification based on the stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation. The term laser denotes light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. A laser light differs from other sources of light because it emits light coherently. Spatial coherence allows the laser to be focused to a tight spot. Lasers will have high temporal coherence which allows them to have narrow spectrum. Lasers generally have many applications. They are generally used in common consumer devices such as optical disk drives, laser printer, & barcode scanner. They are also used in fiber-optic and free-space optical communication. They are used mainly in medicine for laser surgery and various skin treatments, and in industry. They are also used in military as well as law enforcement devices for marking targets and measuring range and speed.

Scope and Importance
The term laser is as an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. In modern usuage light denotes electromagnetic radiation of different frequency, not only visible light, ultraviolet laser, X-ray laser, infrared laser, and so on are there. It has been noted that the term LOSER stands for light oscillation by stimulated emission of radiation. A laser has a gain medium, a mechanism which is required to supply energy, and it needs something to provide it with optical feedback. The gain medium allows amplifying the light by the process of stimulated emission. Light with specific wavelength first passes through the gain medium and it gets amplified. For this purpose of amplification the gain medium should be supplied with energy in order to amplify it. This process is technically called as pumping. The energy that is supplied is generally in the form of electric current, or as light of different wavelengths. The term laser has been used in various types of process like laser doping , laser ablation , laser engravers , power electronics , medicine industries , optoelectronics devices , photonics , optical systems , biopotonics , nanophotonics and etc. The most common types of lasers use feedback from an optical cavity which is a pair of mirrors on either end of the gain medium. Light bounces back and forth between these mirrors, passing through the gain medium and it get amplified every time. In one of the two mirrors, the output coupler is partially transparent. Some of the light has the capacity to escape through this mirror. Depending upon the design of the light that is coming out of the laser it may spread out or it will form a narrow beam. These types of device are sometimes called as laser oscillator. Most of the lasers also contain an additional element that has the capacity to affect the emitted light such as the wavelength, polarization, and beam shape.
