The term “medical genetics” has been variously defined as the science of human biological variation as it relates to health and disease; the study of the etiology, pathogenesis, and natural history of diseases and disorders that are at least partially genetic in origin; and the application of genetics to medicine or to medical practice. Furthermore, medical genetics services have been defined as “an integrated clinical and laboratory service provided for those with [or] concerned about a disorder with a significant genetic component and their families (this includes inherited and sporadic genetic disorders)….” These definitions embody the tension between medical genetics as a science and as a clinical area or specialty of medicine, but, clearly, medical genetics is really both. The main methods of investigations in Medical Genetics are Cytogenetics, Molecular genetics, Chromosome mapping, Clinical genetics, Clinical application of gene mapping, Population genetics, Genetic counseling.
The main significance of genetics in medicine also called as medical genetics is its role in the etiology of many disorders. Any disease is the result of the combined action of the genetic component and environment, but in many disorders, the role of genetic component is larger, even completely.
