Foreign body

Anything of material substance in the tissues or cavities of the body that has been introduced either intentionally or accidentally which may or may not cause harm to the host body is termed as foreign body.The response of host depends on the nature of foreign body. Most of them causes irritation and inflammation. It also depends on the site if foreign body. Some times it may interrupt breathe or they may cause loss of vision or deafness if the site are ears. They can bring infection into the body or acquire infectious agents and protect them from the body's immune defenses. If the foreign body enters directly into blood by the means of infusions it triggers immune responses. Theses foreign bodies may be like bacteria virus or some other infectious agents which cause harm to the host body. At the most preliminary step body temperature is elevated. And later immunological reactions are initiated. Foreign bodies are common in animals, especially dogs and cats. Dogs will readily eat toys, bones, and any object that either has food on it or retains the odor of food. Unlike humans, dogs are susceptible to gastrointestinal obstruction due to their ability to swallow relatively large objects and pass them through the esophagus. Foreign bodies most commonly become lodged in the stomach because of the inability to pass through the pyloric sphincter, and in the jejunum. Symptoms of gastrointestinal obstruction include vomiting, abdominal pain, and depression due to dehydration. Peritonitis results if either the stomach or intestine has ruptured. Foreign bodies in the stomach can sometimes be removed by endoscopic retrieval or if necessary by gastrotomy. Foreign bodies in the jejunum are removed byenterotomy. Foreign bodies like pollen grains when enters nasal tract, they mediate acute immune responses and they might become reasons for ill factors like asthma or some other pulmonary infections. To avoid this accidental entry, individuals should use a mask and proper care should be taken in polluted or hazardous environment.
