Cadmium poisoning occurs when a person inhales in high levels of cadmium from the air, or eats food or drinks water containing high levels of cadmium. Cadmium generally present in Batteries, SMD chip resistors, infrared detectors, semiconductors in the e-waste. Improper processing of cadmium can enter through polluted air (open burning), soil and water (dumping into landfills or near river) which affect negatively to environment and human health. Cadmium displaces zinc in many metallo-enzymes and many of the symptoms of cadmium toxicity can be traced to a cadmium-induced zinc deficiency. Some of the effects of acute cadmium exposure are flu-like symptoms, fever, chills, muscle aches. Chronic exposure effect of cadmium : • Respiratory Effects : lung disease and emphysema • Cardiovascular Effects : increased systolic blood pressure, peripheral artery disease. • Renal Effects : renal tubular dysfunction, kidney damage, clinical nephropathy, renal damage, Kidney stones etc. • Skeletal Lessions : bone disease, educed mineral density in bone • "Itai-itai" Disease • Other Effects : mild anemia, anosmia and yellowing of teeth • Developmental Effects : cadmium crosses the placenta causing birth defects, placental damage and fetal death. • Cancer Biomarkers of excessive exposure : Increased concentrations of urinary beta-2 microglobulin can be an early indicator of renal dysfunction in persons chronically exposed to low but excessive levels of environmental cadmium. The urinary beta-2 microglobulin test is an indirect method of measuring cadmium exposure.
