Transfusions are used for various medical conditions to replace lost components of the blood. Blood transfusion is the process of receiving the blood products into one’s circulation intravenously. The modern medical practice commonly uses only components of the blood, such as red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, plasma, and clotting factors. A blood transfusion is a process that involves taking blood from one person (the donor) and giving it to someone else. You may need a blood transfusion for a number of reasons, including: to replace blood lost during major surgery, childbirth or a severe accident and to treat anemia that has failed to respond to other treatments like anemia is a condition where a person has low levels of red blood cells and to treat inherited Blood Disorders, such as thalassemia or sickle cell anemia. Possible Risks of Blood Transfusion: There are several risks associated with blood transfusion, although it can be life-saving. Infections may be the main risk, donor screening and careful testing may avoid the infections.

It’s very important that you let your nurse know right away if you notice any changes in how you feel, such as itching, shivering, headache, chest or back pain, throat tightness, nausea, dizziness, trouble breathing, or other problems, when you are getting a transfusion of any kind. Transfusion reactions: Transfusion reactions may occur with Blood transfusion, some reactions happen as soon as the transfusion is started, while others take several days or even longer to develop.There are some reactions that include: febrile reaction, allergic reaction, acute immune hemolytic reaction, and transfusion-related acute lung injury.
