Biomedical Informatics

As per available reports about 18 Conferences, 7 workshops are presently dedicated exclusively to Biomedical Informatics are 2 articles being published on Biomedical Informatics.

Biomedical Informatics lacks a clear and theoretically grounded definition. Many proposed definitions focus on data, information, and knowledge. But it doesn’t provide an adequate definition of these terms. Leveraging insights from the philosophy of information, we define informatics as the science of information, where information is data plus meaning. Biomedical informatics is the science of information as applied to or studied in the context of biomedicine. Defining the object of study of informatics as data plus meaning clearly distinguishes the field from related fields, such as computer science, statistics and biomedicine, which have different objects of study. The emphasis on data plus meaning also suggests that biomedical informatics problems tend to be difficult when they deal with concepts that are hard to capture using formal, computational definitions. In other words, problems where meaning must be considered are more difficult than problems where manipulating data without regard for meaning is sufficient. Lifestyle Medicine, Personalized Medicine Diabetes and Translational Medicine are techniques used to analyze biological markers in the genome and proteome, realizing the value of personalized medicine the individual's genetic code and how their cells express their genes as proteins, by applying molecular biology to medical testing.

Scope and Importance:

Furthermore, the definition implies that informatics research, teaching, and service should focus on biomedical information as data plus meaning rather than only computer applications in biomedicine. Yet there is still no universally accepted definition of medical, health, bio- or biomedical informatics. Often, any activity that relates to computing is labeled “informatics”. There is even some debate regarding the desirability of a definition since any meaningful definition has the potential to exclude good work or restrict the use of informatics as a marketing term.

We emphasize that a definition is not a value judgment. By defining informatics we are not claiming that informatics is better or worse than other. In order for there to be a field of informatics, there must be definable activities that are not informatics. The science of managing information for health care, research, education, and administration by applying, integrating, and evaluating information technology along with its associated policies, procedures, and organizational cultures. This includes the study of all forms of information technology from paper through to high performance computers. Medical informatics has to do with all aspects of understanding and promoting the effective organization, analysis, management, and use of information in health care.

Market Analysis:

Physicians frustrated with treating patients who are sick instead of helping them stay well are turning toward preventive and lifestyle medicine techniques. However, a new practice philosophy can be risky, possibly costing patients and dollars. Experts say that with the right strategy, practices that invest in lifestyle medicine now are at the forefront of the next big change in healthcare. In 2007, John Principe, MD, was close to quitting medicine after 20 years of practicing primary care medicine in Palos Heights, Illinois. He was losing his passion for healthcare, but gaining an interest in cooking. He decided to attend the Harvard Healthy Kitchen’s Healthy Lives Program, and realized that lifestyle medicine was the answer to aligning his business with his new interests. The transition has not been an easy one, however.
