Phytochemistry is the branch of science which deals with the study of phytochemicals. Phytochemicals are derived from two words Phyto means “Plant” and chemicals are the different secondary metabolites of plants. In Phytochemistry, generally extraction procedures have been done. Phytochemicals are extracted from different parts of plants and used for various purposes. The main techniques used for extraction are: chromatographic techniques (example: HPLC, GC, LC-MS etc. after extraction and isolation next step is structural elucidation of chemical moiety isolated, we’ll do it with the help of spectroscopic techniques. The main spectrophotometers used for structural elucidation purpose is Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrophotometer (MS), and infrared spectrophotometer (IR).
Hydrogen-NMR tells about how many types of hydrogen are present in chemical moiety, mass spectrophotometer tells about possible moieties formed after fragmentation of chemical moiety. Infrared spectrophotometer tells about different types of functional groups present in the moiety. These instruments form spectra and from this spectrum we can predict the structure of the molecule. After structural elucidation, we can predict he properties of the molecule and therefore we can use the same molecule as we need.
